75th Anniversary Solent Branch Osborne House Rally
Sofia Hawkes of Blue Moon aged 3 and Maurice Owens aged 87 of Old Possum enjoy each others company. Now in its 14th year, the Portsmouth Branch Rally to East Cowes Marina to enjoy the music of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra appears to remain as popular as ever, with over 30 yachts taking part.
From Mike Highwood - “Tokenkay”
This event is quite different to many RNSA activities in that it is very much a family occasion with some yachts having three generations on board. The age range, this year, between the youngest and oldest taking part was an amazing 84 years! As well as the regulars, a “useful” feature of this event is that it attracts some people to their first RNSA event, where they fall into the ever welcoming clutches of our Branch Cruising Chairman, Peter Stonestreet!
This year was different in that the BSO laid on two concerts at Osborne House. The first was on Friday evening, when the audience was entertained and danced to the songs and music of “ABBA”. Saturday took the form of a lunch time pontoon party, a pre-concert picnic followed by a traditional “Last night of the Proms” concert and a splendid firework display.
On Sunday morning we awoke to cloud and drizzle, but the old proverb held true and it was “fine before eleven”. Some sailed away early to catch the morning tide, while the others remained to enjoy a BBQ in splendid sunshine.
The event is so popular that the marina could sell their visitor space many times over. It was therefore a great pleasure, that when I called at the office to say a farewell thanks, their final comment was “ We like the RNSA - see you next year Mike”. It seems that little things, like leaving the BBQ area as we found it, do make a difference.
