RNSA(P) Autumn Series 2010 - Race 1
Perfect conditions for the start of Autumn racing. Kurketreeker takes a doulbe first.
Perfect racing conditions greeted the 13 boats that took to the start line for the first race of the Autumn Series. 10 to 15 kts from the ESE and bright sun made for a great outing. After a spinnaker reach across the Solent to Mother Bank a two sail reach took the fleet back to the mainland shore at Browndown. From here to the finish with a west going tide it was a very fair beat dodging both the current and the Stokes Bay dinghy racing back to Gilkicker.
In the first start “Artificer” (Glyn Jones) was a premature starter and had to return. Being over the line in a downwind down tide start is the last thing you want. The Mustang/Sigma 33 trio of “Crazy Horse” (Ralph & Derek Budden), “Spirit of Kudu” (Mark Watkins) and “Happy Apple” (Richard Tarr) were as usual in very close company before “Spirit of Kudu” drew clear to finish a minute and a half ahead. Taking head from the first start recall the larger boats were a bit line shy with only “Kurketrekker” (Steve Parry) hitting the line on time. She extended her advantage on every leg, particularly the beat to take the win on both IRC and PPH. “Tinker T” (David Bunn) and “Electra” (Mike Tattersall) had their usual close fought battle with “Tinker T” leading on the downwinds only to be passed on the beat by the higher pointing “Electra”. “Electra” pulled out just enough lead on the water to claim 2nd on IRC with “Tinker T” in 3rd. On PPH “Spirit of Kudu” and “Sunshine” (Malcolm Roberts) took the remaining podium places.
It was most encouraging to have a fleet of this size and to see so many of the crews enjoying a pie and pint in the Hornet Sailing Club. The Club’s support for the racing fleet over the past couple of years has been very much appreciated. Although we know that we will lose some of the competitors when the earlier start times come into force there will still be plenty to race for.
