The Tremontana Screams!!!

When will it stop?? The Tremontana continued to assert its authority for the final day of the 2013 Defi-Wind, as the RNSA posted respectable scores across the board and proved they can compete with the rest of Europe.

The final day of the Defi promised to be no less exciting than the two previous days with a slightly stronger wind forecast. After a delay waiting for the wind to settle down to a steady direction it was all systems for go for the fifth and final race which was to be another 2 lap affair.

At start time the wind had well and truly kicked in to around 30kts making for a fast and exciting start. Out of the RNSA team Dave Strudwick had decided not to take part because of injury and aside from Adrian suffering gear failure towards the end of the first leg everyone else completed the race in good time. Paul Morris had another good race finishing in 125th place and won the prize for the biggest grin of the day. And then it was all over - aside from the not uncomplicated task of de-rigging equipment and loading up vans and cars without filling them with sand which is not easy with a gale blowing across a sandy and dusty car park. Overall results after five races were:

Paul Morris 117th
Gerry Northwood 258th
Russ Clark 321st
Johnny Walker 329th
Adrian Wallis 378th
Si Cave 468th
Dave Strudwick 530th

Paul was Mr consistent throughout the week and whilst the rest of team all suffered at least one incident of gear failure, Adrian and Johnny paid the penalty for infringing regulations in one guise or another. Gerry and Russ sailed particularly well in the later stages of the competition to thoroughly deserve their good positions.

All in all this years Defi provided 5 amazing races, sailed in winds ranging from 25 to 40kts and covering a total of 180kms. Every member of the team has learnt something about their equipment and themselves and had a fantastic time to boot. Now, with tired limbs but a huge sense of achievement its time for the long journey home.
