Royal Navy Windsurfing Team Training Camp to Dahab

Twelve Royal Navy windsurfers and 3 enthusiastic windsurfing partners enjoyed a successful training camp in Dahab, Egypt from 1 to 8 Aug 10.

Indeed, with 6 windy planing days out of 7 it was difficult for the RN Windsurfing team not to enjoy and take full advange of a wonderful opportunity for them to hone their windsurfing skills in preparation for this year's Inter Services competition and the Help for Heroes Round the Isle of Wight Windsurfing Challenge.

Each day there was a programme of racing with the races becoming
increasingly ambitious as the week developed. We started with some simple slalom courses in
the lagoon and gradually wound up the level of difficulty finishing on
Saturday with 4 cracking course races which started from Baby Bay, spanned
the length and breadth of speedy and to the shipping buoy, before
returning to Baby Bay.

Dahab being Dahab there was much emphasis on freestyle and a
light wind freestyle competition was held on Fri (the windless day) and a
proper planing freestyle competition in Baby Bay on Sun morning. The
good news being that for those who had not competed before, the racing
and the freestyle competitions helped de-mystify the competitive side
of windsurfing and demonstrated how useful it is to improving skills
across the board.

RCdre (Winndsurfing) Dave Strudwick kept the speed flag flying leading the way with speeds
in excess of 30 knots. With the focus on improving all round windsurfing skills through racing and freestyle, speed sailing did not enjoy quite the emphasis that it has had on previous training camps. But most of the team had a go and enjoyed clocking up
some respectable speeds along the strip.

Well done to Rich Cessford who organised the exped and many thanks to the RN & RM Sports Lottery and RNSA for support.

The photograph shows the team in good spirits celebrating a successful week of windsurfing on the Saturday night before returning home. The theme was Egyptian, hence the Father Christmas, his elf and assorted cross dressers ????
